As a new to-be-mom, the changes you will experience during this beautiful and amazing phase of your life may be very overwhelming but, rest assured. Trust me, you will enjoy it at the same time. While pregnancy does bring along a range of not very desirable signs and symptoms, you will be able to take care of those and get through soon enough. :)
When you are pregnant, constipation and stomach bloated are very common. There are many reasons to it. Mainly because of the increase in hormone progesterone which relaxes muscles throughout the whole body and this includes digestive tract. Thus, this causes food to pass through the intestine slower. Also, as your baby grows, there is an increased pressure on your pelvic area which led to constipation.
No worries. To ease this, I have tried a few remedies which had helped me quite a bit.
Fibre rich food
Included fibre rich food in my daily diet. One of my current favourite is pomegranate, either the seeds or the juice. Other than rich in fibre, pomegranate also contains iron, vitamin C, vitamin K, folic acid, potassium and antioxidants which are bonus for pregnancy. They are very yummy too.
Apple cider vinegar
Some might not agree taking ACV especially the raw, unpasteurised one because it contains E.coli. So, please consult your doctor before taking this. ACV contains pectin, which is a water soluble fibre that helps to normalise the acid levels and increase the absorption of fibre to improve digestion and to ease constipation. It also contains malic acid which helps to ease constipation as well. However, be cautious when taking ACV as it is acidic in nature and might irritate your throat and stomach. Thus, drink it in moderation and mix with water. Also, the acidity will destroy enamel, so, gargle with water after drinking ACV. I take 1 teaspoon of ACV with a glass of water, twice a day after meal.
Yoghurt
Yoghurt is rich in probiotic that stimulates digestion and prevent all forms of gastrointestinal disorders. It is best taken in natural form as those with fruits added contain more sugar.
Exercise
I know, pregnant women often tend to ignore exercising because of the extra weight. However, exercise not only can help in pregnancy in many ways, it is known to stimulate the bowel and improve digestion. However, do not exert yourself. Consult your gynae what exercises are safe for yourself and baby.
Water
I can't stress enough how important water is to our body, not just for pregnancy. Since constipation is also related to dehydration in the colon, make sure you have enough water. When your body is hydrated, less water will be withdrawn form the colon and thus keep your stool soft and easy to pass.
So, these are my 5 remedies that help me with constipation. Of course there are many other ways that you can find. Undoubtedly, pregnancy changes a woman both physically and emotionally. I hope what you been through makes you stronger, determined and more confident!
